Roll your own devices!

by mary_lou_jepsen on May 2nd, 2012

Making your own device with a Pixel Qi screen is getting easier. Of course, if you just want to buy an existing tablet – go ahead. Going this way can allow you to create new devices, and perhaps even a new business selling your creation.

At Pixel Qi, we have always tried to support the developer communities and wanted to call your attention to a new offering from Tin Can Tools. They have just announced a new kit (now available). The kit provides all the cabling and adapters to hook Pixel Qi screens to a variety of small credit card sized computers, namely: BeagleBoard Rev-C, BeagleBoard-xM, PandaBoard, PandaBoard-ES and compatible clones.

Consider taking this further – combine with the wide variety of approaches for styling your own housing (Makerbot, Stereolith Printing, or even hand-crafted housing or steampunking it) and if you like: add your own touchscreen. Ways to do so with a Beagleboard and Pandaboard are documented at Make Magazine and touchscreen kits are available online at places like alibaba.com. We do recommended using optically bonded projected capacitive touch solution.

I’m really glad to see Pixel Qi supporting the “homebrew” markets. I’m a little disappointed in the lack of availability of your full product range, though. As a hobbyist, I’m incredibly interested in PQi screens, but as a video enthusiast, I greatly prefer higher resolutions. That said, the PQ101WX01 seems like a good fit for me, but it seems very difficult to find one. The only price I’ve seen suggests it’ll cost upwards of $500 and require a 6-week lead time; I’m currently awaiting responses from other distributors.

I guess what I’m getting at is, will a broader range of your screens be available for hobbyists anytime soon?
