Comment on Charlie Rose/Ken Auletta on the OLPC/Intel Breakup by tchgadget http://pixelqi.com/blog1/2008/04/16/charlie-roseken-auletta-on-the-olpcintel-breakup/#comment-21 tchgadget Sat, 24 May 2008 09:45:00 +0000 http://pixelqi.com/blog1/2008/04/16/charlie-roseken-auletta-on-the-olpcintel-breakup/#comment-21 I am a CTO of a k-12 district in the US. The district is purchasing tablet computers for our students. We currently own over 5,500 tablet PC's that are distributed to students while they attend schools in our district. We will be distributing more devices to campuses in the next 4 years. The price point for devices are a very large concern of our district. We have discovered that the pen technology is very important in integrating the devices in all areas of the curriculum. It seems that the pen technology is becoming more available over seas and not in the US. I've read about the Pixel Qi and very interesed in receiving more information about the product. Our state is moving to onlin, end of course testing by 2011. All students will be required to pass a test taken on line in order to advance to the next grade level. We are committed to provide the tools for the students, but the price point of pen technology devices are premitting us from deploying it in such a way that it can impact All Students. I realize that the "3rd" world countries need the technology, but schools in the US are suffering as well. They cannot affort the devices that will actually impact learning. The lap is a great start, but it can only be used in 50% of the curriculum areas, where as a device that has pen technology can be used in all areas of the curriculum. Price as well as integration into the curriculum should be the primary focuses of the devices that are developed. The curriculum should drive the technology, not the technology drive the curriculum. Certainly makes a case for submitting your own media release photos for these types of events, especially in this age. Is there going to be a camera in the XO-2 ? Shame they did not provide a link to your opening Keynote Address. Lots of touch screen interest according to the text, though the web photos of products added little to nothing to the text. Truly spectacular. I've shown it to friends from here (NH, USA) to Amsterdam, and all of them are impressed to. (I could stand something a little less garish to carry around though. :) ) I can't wait for a sunlight-readable cell phone screen. Laptops as well, but the cell phone is the killer. And I'm buying the first mass-market-paperback-sized ebook reader that has your screen and no DRM. To contribute to your question, then: please do whatever gets your technology into the mainstream faster! I have an XO that I use primarily as an ebook reader outside. Truly spectacular. I tend to think that the high prices will not be coming down anytime soon. I've seen specials with some pretty competitive pricing, like the ASUS Eee Surf for $299.00. They seem to of prodded the bottom of the price market and are now settling in on a price and configuration that they are comfortable with. Granted OLPC can still influence this, if their new XO, (to be displayed on the 20th of May 2008) has some compelling new features. Any insights you would like to share about the new XO ??? So, short answer, you will get to your goal of open hardware, it will just take a bit of time. If you would like to get something going quicker, then I would suggest that you post some interesting cutting edge research that is available but perhaps not widely known and ask for ideas regarding a specific application. This need not be your research but areas of interest to you. Something akin to what a major adviser would do with graduate students. Put a couple of people in charge of this project and pattern it after Thomas Edison's workshop, only brought into the 21st Century.
