Pixel Qi Starting Production

Our first production batch of screens will be ready shortly. We will be ramping production scale over Q1 2010.

We can now announce that the first units are going into specialized tablet devices with multi-touch. Increasingly these screens will be super-slim, but some customers prefer the standard thickness.

During Q1 2010 we will make every attempt to allow a small number of our screens to be available to the DIY community. If possible please hold your individual requests until we post information on how to do this. We do hear you, but we are flat-out starting production this month. Individual requests will not be answered until we post information on how to do DIY orders.

Pixel Qi will be at CES in Las Vegas in early January supporting our customers. We can’t yet announce with whom we will be showing but hope to shortly.

    I really hope that you guys allow DIY’ers to choose a custom aspect ratio. I want a 1:2 aspect ratio 5 to 6 inch display (diagonally) .. because that form factor fits in the pocket (assuming the bezel is very minimal) but still makes a usable tablet.

    Tablets may be a nice thing, but it would appear to me, that manufacturers underestimate your technology’s potential for traditional productive mobile devices…

    Unless the devices come with keyboards, I’ll have to learn to tinker around with eletronics myself it seems.

    Even more a shame is they’ll come with multitouch. Resistive technology has better pen support from what I know and I never heard so far a resistive touch screen worked for multitouch.

    @Yu
    Conventional capacitive touch screens, the technology usually associated with multitouch, doesn’t support pen input at all. However I seem to recall a relatively new implementation of the technology that could. Conversely there are in fact resistive touch screens with multitouch support now. Though the latter seems less ideal than the former, since resistive has relatively poor transmissive properties.

    It appears the first details are available on the tablet device:

    The hardware specs are amazing…and Android is Linux, so it appears its very hackable. I can’t wait to buy one of them, I hope there’re available ASAP after CES.

    My question to PixelQi: Is this thing using the “DCON” chip already? Some months ago you said that first generation will be without DCON, but this was with regards to usage with standard laptops..
